Medal of Honor Timeline in The Weeks (1861-1971)
The Medal of Honor is the United States of America’s highest military decoration. It was created in 1862 during the American Civil War. Awarded in the name of the U.S. Congress, only to U.S. military personnel by the President of the United States. The recipient must have distinguished themselves “conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity” at the risk of their own life, above and beyond the call of duty, in action against an enemy of the United States. Due to the nature of this medal, it is commonly presented posthumously.
Because the medal is presented “in the name of Congress”, it is often referred to as the “Congressional Medal of Honor”. However, the official name is simply “Medal of Honor”. In 1990, Congress designated March 25 annually as “National Medal of Honor Day”.
